Tom Lehman Interview

A Heartfelt Reflection: Tom Lehman’s Surprising Memory of Hiawatha Golf Course

When I sat down with Tom Lehman, the renowned professional golfer, to discuss his first memory of Hiawatha Golf Course, I expected to hear tales of great victories or memorable shots. However, his answer took me by surprise and left me with a profound appreciation for the rich history and remarkable individuals associated with this iconic Minneapolis golf course.

It was February 2022 when NBC’s Golf Channel dedicated a segment to exploring the captivating history of Hiawatha Golf Course. As a proud Minneapolitan and avid golfer, I had the honor of being involved in the project as a producer and had the privilege of interviewing Tom Lehman himself.

Unfortunately, the clip featuring Tom’s recollection did not make the final cut, an unfortunate omission considering the significance of his words. But now, as we find ourselves in the present year, it feels fitting to share Tom’s deep admiration for one of Minneapolis’s greatest golfers, Edward Manderville, whose legacy continues to resonate even after his passing in 2020.

Throughout our conversation, it became evident that Tom held a profound respect for Edward Manderville, a true golfing legend whose impact on Hiawatha Golf Course and the local golfing community was immeasurable. Edward’s talent, dedication, and contributions to the sport left an indelible mark on the hearts of those who had the pleasure of knowing him.

As the project unfolded, I had the privilege of collaborating with Minneapolis City Councilwoman LaTrisha Vetaw, whose presence and unwavering commitment to the community were truly inspiring. Working alongside such a compassionate and kind-hearted individual was a reminder of the positive change that can be achieved through collective effort and shared passion.

Reflecting on my experience with Tom Lehman and Councilwoman LaTrisha Vetaw, I am filled with a sense of gratitude for the opportunity to be part of a project that celebrates the rich heritage and extraordinary individuals associated with Hiawatha Golf Course. Their stories serve as a testament to the profound impact this course has had on the lives of many, shaping not only their golfing journeys but also fostering a sense of community and camaraderie.

As we navigate the ever-evolving world of golf and embrace the challenges and triumphs that lie ahead, let us remember the enduring legacy of those who have left an indelible mark on the courses we love. Their stories inspire us to strive for greatness, to cherish the bonds we form through the game, and to honor the rich history that has shaped our golfing landscapes.

May the spirit of Hiawatha Golf Course continue to ignite our passion for the sport and remind us of the remarkable individuals who have graced its fairways.
